What Is Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)?

The Union Public Service Commission, abbreviated as UPSC, is responsible for conducting the Civil Services Examination. This examination is held at three stages: Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and Interview. The candidates who qualify in the Preliminary Examination are called for the Mains Examination. The candidates who pass Mains are called for an interview by the Union Public Service Commission. There are various Government jobs in India that can be obtained through this examination.

Major Types Of UPSC Tests

The tests conducted by UPSC are mainly of three types:

1) Objective Tests

UPSC Objective tests are for recruitment to Group ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ Services and for appointment to the posts of Assistant Section Officer (Multipurpose), Assistant Personal Officer, and various other posts in Group ‘B’ and ‘C’ Service.

2) Descriptive Tests

PSC descriptive test is for appointment to the post of Assistant Audit Officer, Junior Accountant-cum-Cashier, and various other posts. The candidates are shortlisted based on marks obtained in the Objective Tests conducted by UPSC along with their performance in the Descriptive Tests.

3) The Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT)

CSAT is a qualifying test for Main Examination and Interview conducted by UPSC, mainly to assess the mental ability and reasoning skills of candidates.

For Group ‘A’ and ‘B’ services: – The candidates should have cleared their 10+2 or equivalent examination with English as one of the subjects along with mathematics. The aggregate marks in these two subjects should not be less than 50%.

For Group ‘C’ services: – The candidates must have passed their 10+2 or equivalent examination with physics, chemistry, and mathematics (PCM) as compulsory subjects along with a 3-year Diploma in any engineering discipline. The aggregate marks in these 3 subjects should not be less than 50%.

For Assistant Audit Officer’s and Junior Accountant-cum-Cashier’s post: –

Certificate in computer application (ITI pass), certificate of proficiency in English, typing speed of 30 words per minute on the computer, and a knowledge of Computer/Clerk Typist-Grade C in English proficiency Test for Clerical Staff are the qualifying qualifications.

For Assistant Section Officer’s post: –

Certificate in computer application (ITI pass), certificate of proficiency in English, typing speed of 30 words per minute on the computer, and a knowledge of Computer/Clerk Typist-Grade C in English proficiency Test for Clerical Staff are the qualifying qualifications.

For Assistant Personnel Officer’s post: –
